3	1814		Metronome invented. Washington D.C. is burnt during War of 1812. Francis Scott Key writes the words to the Star Spangled Banner. Schinkel paints Gothic Cathedral by a River.Napoleon exiled to Elba. Louis XVIII becomes King of France.
4	1815		Latrobe returns as architect for US Capitol Bldg.
5	1816		Rossini's The Barber of Seville. Jane Austen publishes Emma
6	1817	Liszt's father Adam notices Franz's interest in his music.	Kloeber draws Beethoven portrait.
7	1818	Adam gives piano lessons with stunning progress by young Franzi	Karl Marx born. Casper David Friedrich paints Wanderer above a Sea of Fog.
8	1819	Plays difficult Hummel & Bach pieces and shows a marked skill for improvisation.	Lord Byron writes Mazeppa Géicault paints Raft of the Medusa Schopenhauer publishes The World as Will and Idea
9	1820	Plays first of several concerts winning aristocrat's attention and an award to study in Vienna.	John Keats publishes The Eve of St. Agnes
10	1821	Adam seeks permission from Prince to leave Hungary for son's lessons	Erard patents his double escapement device for piano keyboards. William Blake is commissioned to illustrate The book of Job.
11	1822	Family moves to Vienna, Liszt studies piano with Carl Czerny and composition with Antonio Salieri.	Schubert writes Unfinished Sym.
12	1823	Receives kiss from Beethoven. Is refused by Cherubini to enter the Paris Conservatory. Adam Liszt resigns from his post in Hungary to devote himself to his son's career.	Beethoven writes 9th Sym. Photographer Mathew Brady born.
13	1824	The young Liszt becomes the darling of Paris. Erard takes interest and sets tour for England. Writes virtuoso pieces and takes composition lessons from Paer	Byron dies, Smetana & Bruckner are born. Casper David Friedrich paints Sea of Ice,wreck of the Hope.
14	1825	Liszt plays concert in London before King George IV. Finishes his opera Don Sanche which is performed in Paris.	Salieri dies at age 74, J.Strauss II & Hanslick are born.
15	1826	Tours France and Switzerland. Studies with Reicha. Writes Études en douze exercices. Adam Liszt's health rapidly deteriorates and he dies at age 50.	Mendelssohn writes Midsummer Night's Dream. First photograph is taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce
16	1827	At a concert in London Moscheles was present and wrote, "In its power and mastery of every difficulty Liszt's playing surpasses anything previously heard."	Beethoven dies at age 56
17	1828	Settled in Paris Liszt supports his mother by teaching. After an ill-fated affair with Caroline de Saint-Cricq Liszt's deep melancoly is partially consoled by religion and literature.	Schubert dies at 31
18	1829	Liszt suffers from deep depression and loses interest in music. He resents his craft being branded as a source of entertainment, like a dog doing tricks for the elite to the detriment of Art.	Berlioz writes Symphonie Fantastique, Rossini William Tell. George Stephenson develops famous Rocket Locomotive which stimulates railroad development.
19	1830	Inspired he sketches a Revolutionary Sym. meets Hugo, Heine & Berlioz. Attends Smphonie Fantastique premiere.	Liszt's friend Delacroix paints Liberty leading the people. Hans von Bulow is born.
20	1831	Befriends Mendelssohn. Meets Chopin for the first time.	Hugo writes Notre Dame de Paris
21	1832	Befriends Chopin after seeing his debut and is inspired by Paganini's virtuoso performances. Liszt writes ,"For two weeks my mind and my fingers have been working like two damned souls,-Homer, the Bible, Plato, Locke, Byron, Hugo, Lamartine, Chateaubriand, Beethoven, Bach, Hummel, Mozart, and Weber are all around me."	Goethe dies at age 82. George Sand writes Indiana.
22	1833	Meets Comtesse Marie d'Agoult. Writes Symphonie Fantastique transcription. & Schubert song	Brahms & Borodin born. Chopin writes Etudes op.10
23	1834	Meets George Sand. Performs his Lelio Fantasy with Berlioz. Marie d'Agoult's daughter dies.	Berlioz writes Harold in Italy
24	1835	Elopes to Switzerland with Marie d' Agoult. Daughter Blandine born. Begins his Album d'un Voyageur.	Bellini dies. Saint-Saens born.
25	1836	Writes many Operatic transcriptions. Liszt plays the famous organ in the Church of St. Nicholas and deeply moves George Sand. Introduces George Sand to Chopin. Liszt and Chopin play Moscheles's Sonata for Four hands.	Arc de Triomphe is erected in Paris.
26	1837	Defeats Thalberg in famous duel. Writes 12Grand Études. Liszt, George Sand and Marie d'Agoult stay at Nohant. Daughter Cosima born in Como, Italy.	Hummel & Field die, Mili Balakirev born. Berlioz writes Benvenuto Cellini. Samuel Morse invents the Telegraph.
27	1838	Plays charity concert for Pest flood victims. Writes Paganini Etudes. Liszt is key reason for European interest in Schubert who's works he performs as well as his own Schubert transcriptions.	Bizet born, Schumann writes Kinderszenen, Kreisleriana. Dickens' writes Oliver Twist. Turner paints The Fighting Temeraire.
28	1839	Befriends Ingres. Gives historic first Solo Piano Recital. Son Daniel born May 9th. Skecthes pieces for his Italian Années de Pèlerinage Italian Sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini finishes bust of Liszt.	Mussorgsky and Paul Cézanne are born, Paer dies. Chopin writes Preludes op.28 Berlioz writes Romeo & Juliet. Ingres paints L'Odalisque a l'Esclave.
29	1840	Receives sword of honour in Pest and debuts as a conductor. Meets Schumann and Wagner. Tours.	Tchaikovsky born. Paganini dies.
30	1841	Tours London, Ireland, Scottland, Germany, Brussels. Liszt is a major sensation. Writes more operatic transcriptions.	Dvorak, Tausig & Sgambati born. Wagner writes The Flying Dutchman.
31	1842	Successful tours in Berlin, Russia, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. This is the height of Lisztomania. He's appointed Kapellmeister at Weimar, Germany.	Boito & Massenet are born. Cherubini dies.
32	1843	Meets Glinka on Russian, Polish tour. Writes songs of Goethe,Heine and Hugo. Liszt conducts several concerts including Mozart's opera The Magic Flute.	Edvard Grieg born. Dickens' writes A Christmas Carol.
33	1844	Breaks with Marie d'Agoult. Tours Spain, Germany and France. He is universally regarded as the world's greatest pianist. Writes 6 songs with words by Victor Hugo.	Rimsky-Korsakov born. Verdi writes Ernani
34	1845	In Portugal he is described in the press as, "the God of the piano." Contributes to and attends the unveiling of the Beethoven monument in Bonn. Writes several songs including 3 with words by Schiller.	Wagner writes Tannhauser. Edgar Allan Poe writes The Raven.
35	1846	Continues European concerts and writes his first Hungarian Rhapsody. Liszt receives Beethoven's Broadwood piano as a gift. Writes transcriptions of Beethoven's Coriolan and Egmont overtures.	Marie d'Agoult writes Nélida
36	1847	Meets Princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein in Kiev. Liszt ends his famous virtuoso career and never accepts a fee for any future concerts.	Mendelssohn dies.
